the british workers’ unions of miners in the 70s and 80s were like a legend. with solidarity and courage to resist, the strike had led to power cut and a halt in social production, which hindered the government from implementing anything arbitrarily. this made margaret thatcher decide to defeat “the enemy within”, while the miners united different workers’ unions and social communities to fight to the death. one year on, thatcher won. leftists and labour movements declined.
looking back on the past, still the enemy within recorded the most tragic and miserable history of the modern labour movement in uk. 30 years later, workers and their supporters still showed their grief and anger, but they never forget.
the miners experienced unprecedented failure at that time. however, in the general election this year, leftists of uk labour party were rising again. this film may be a starting point for us to reflect on how to encounter failure, and to search for power notwithstanding the atmosphere of powerlessness shrouding our society.
