there are often different social actions all around the world, many of which nourish activists using cameras as tools. some only do recordings from distance, some have interactions, either deep conversations or shallow chats, with activist in different positions. yet, some take making documentaries itself as a form of social action, expecting to motivate themselves or others, or even make conversions of oneself through the process.
why they pick up documentaries? how can the process of making documentaries be a social action itself? in what kind of ways should audiences articulate these documentaries? haven’t we thought about these questions when/before we were holding cameras in action sites? we believe cameras in action sites have much more power than being merely a recording tool, for examples, to arouse discussion of power differences between activists, to evaluate or even promote the actions by spotting out blind spots or demerit through reviewing the records. yet, in order to achieving the above goals, what should be considered when making documentaries?
in this workshop, we invited jimmy choi, an educator who studies films and documentaries. from the research experiences and knowledge in social action documentary of choi, we hope to exchange thoughts and share difficulties when doing documentaries with all participates. whether you have tried to take recordings or not, or just have an idea of making one; whether you are an art buff or just an ordinary fellows, or even someone has questions about the above ideas. you are all welcome to join. let’s connect with different documentaries ‘producers’, activists and audiences, understanding each others’ thoughts about documentaries and social action, and put our heads together and see whether we can create something new!
(remarks: this extended activity is a relaxing salon. food are welcome. registration required.)
